| The 1961 "Skipper" | Summer 1996 |
Following graduation from Riverside, I went to Cornell University where I received a B. S. in Chemical Engineering in 1965. I played one year of Lightweight Football (weigh-in at 155 lbs. for each game). We had a good year, losing only one game to Army at West Point (7-0). It was two-platoon football and I played defensive line/linebacker. After that year, I learned that I couldnt play football and get a degree, too. Needless to say, I chose the degree. In 1963, after my sophomore year, I married Sheila Kerr (RHS 1962).
Following college graduation, we lived outside of Boston for a year and a half before being transferred to northern California in 1966. In 1967 and 1968 we had two sons, Chris and Tim. In January of 1968, I began working for General Electric in their Nuclear Energy Division. Little did I know that I would be there until I retired, 30 years later (Oct 97). Sheila and I ultimately parted ways amicably. She is currently an insurance underwriter in Menlo Park, California.
I married Karen in December
1988. Karen is a retired teacher/student adviser who worked at Mt. Pleasant High
School in San Jose, California for 25 years. She and I live in Rocklin, CA (~20
miles northeast of Sacramento) and are tremendously enjoying our retirement. We
have become addicted to Hawaii and visit as often as we can. We also have a lot
of fun playing bridge and taking afternoon motorcycle rides through the
beautiful California countryside. Amateur astronomy is another area that I spend
time in when I can.
Further, I am addicted to the personal computer and
spend several hours a day doing one thing or another on it. From managing our
finances, to following the 49ers and the As, to making greeting cards, to
doing our family trees, to tracking backyard rainfall totals, and just
surfing the web. I can always find some reason to get on the machine and
blow an afternoon.
My memories of Riverside High School and our football team are some of the best of my life. I learned lessons about hard work and teamwork that served me well throughout my career. Coach Dingboom and Coach Simon did more to prepare me for my future than anyone else I can think of.
